PUBLIC EXHIBITION OF ART WORK

Opening Event – Fri July 30th 2010. 7 – 9pm
Open Daily Aug 1st – 4th.  11 – 5pm

This group exhibition showcases new work from a vibrant multiple-heritage background. Working with experienced artist-educators across disciplines during an intensive course this Summer, a dynamic range of new artists are discovering more about their own heritage and identity to create this uniquely compelling show.

During nearly eighty hours of intensive, experiential learning, the artists explored the notion of creating identities through a wide variety of artistic practice and self-exploratory exercise.  In the process of this educational programme many different levels and meanings of identity and learning were revealed.

Refreshments available.  All welcome.

More about the project.

In a city centre contemporary art gallery, working with professional artist-educators, the Creating Identities project is facilitating a group of mixed-heritage unemployed learners to help them create an exhibition of artwork based on their own heritage and identities. In the process of creating the work, they are improving basic skills in writing and expressing themselves, using IT and media, creative thinking skills and problem solving, budgeting and event organisation. Towards the end of the project they will receive information, advice and guidance on progression opportunities, including those within Sheffield’s developing creative industries.

Research shows that those of mixed-heritage and BME people often lack a clear sense of their own identity, a situation that undermines their confidence. The content of this project specifically addresses the identity of individuals in a positive and supportive way. Greater confidence will be achieved by learners through positively succeeding in a challenging personal project involving many other people, and the validation of their project through public display and approval.

Creating Identities is managed by Jonathan Drury of Enable Creation www.enablecreation.com, a not-for-profit social enterprise working for empowerment and learning through creativity.
